What is the Role Comparison feature?

The Role Comparison feature in Culture Amp's Career Paths tool helps you easily compare two roles side-by-side. It highlights the similarities and differences between the roles, giving you clear insights into expectations and responsibilities. This makes it easier to make informed decisions about your career, whether you're looking to get promoted, explore lateral moves, or switch to a different area of the business.

How to Access the Role Comparison Feature

From the Career Paths Page:

  1. Go to the Development menu and select Career Paths.

  2. From the Career Paths page, access the Role Comparison tool directly from the navigation panel at the top.

From a Specific Role:

  1. If you have been assigned to a role, you can access that role directly from the Career paths page. Selecting that role opens a full-page view of the role.

  2. Click the Compare button at the top-right of the page to open the role comparison view.

  3. You can also search for other roles to compare, making it easy to explore different options across job groups.

Full-Page Role View: New and Improved!

The updated full-page role view gives you all the role details in one place, making it easier to digest. Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Role Description: A clear summary of the role's purpose.

  • Competencies and Expectations: A detailed list of the skills and behaviors expected for the role.

This update replaces the old side drawer view, making Career Paths your go-to place for role information.

Comparing Roles Side-by-Side

How to Compare Roles:

  1. In the full-page role view, click Compare Role.

  2. The current role is pre-selected. Select the role you want to compare it with (e.g., “Lead Product Manager”).

  3. The side-by-side comparison will highlight key areas such as:

  • Shared Competencies: Competencies with identical expectations across both roles.

  • Differing Competencies: Competencies with varying expectations between roles.

  • Unique Competencies: Competencies that apply to one role but not the other.

For example, a Team Leadership competency might be required for a “Director of Product Management” but not for a “Lead Product Manager”.

When to Use Role Comparisons

  • Promotion Planning: Understand the competencies and expectations needed to move to a more senior role.

  • Lateral Moves: Explore different roles at the same level to see where you might want to expand your experience.

  • Career Development: Identify transferable skills and areas to grow for future opportunities.

Upcoming: AI-Generated Role Summaries

We’re working on an exciting update to make role comparisons even more user-friendly. Soon, we’ll be introducing a generative AI feature that will:

  • Summarize key differences between two roles.

  • Answer questions like:

    • What are the key differences between these roles?

    • Which competencies are transferable?

    • What competencies do I need to develop to transition between roles?

This will give you a quick overview before diving into the details, saving you time and providing even more clarity.
