The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is transforming how organizations operate, often referred to as the "Fourth Industrial Revolution". This shift extends beyond merely implementing new tools or automating tasks; it involves reimagining work itself. For leaders and HR professionals, the primary challenge often lies not in the technology itself, but in the people and cultural dimensions crucial for successful adoption.

To support companies to ensure they are building and strengthening their approach to AI adoption, Culture Amp created the AI effectiveness at work template.

This article will cover:

What's included in the template?

This template specifically focuses on four core factors, or foundational pillars identified by our People Scientists, that contribute to AI Effectiveness at Work: Culture, Confidence, Conscience, and Capability.

Factor

Description

Example

Culture

This factor focuses on the cultural enablers necessary for adopting AI, including leadership support, a clear vision for AI adoption, and fostering an environment that encourages exploration and experimentation with new technologies.

“Our leaders have clearly explained how we plan to use AI to reach our goals”

Confidence

This factor focuses on workforce readiness, or how confident and motivated employees feel to adopt and work alongside AI.

“I feel confident using AI in my day-to-day work”

Conscience

Prioritizing the ethical, transparent, and responsible use of AI is crucial for all organizations. This factor explores the level of trust individuals have in the responsible and ethical use of AI at work.

“I trust that %ACCOUNT_NAME% will use AI in a responsible way”

Capability

Building organisational capability is critical to make AI adoption possible and sustainable. This factor focuses on the technical foundations, including the systems, processes, access, and training required for AI.

“%ACCOUNT_NAME% has the systems and processes in place to support the use of AI tools”

When to run an AI effectiveness at work survey

You can roll out an AI Effectiveness at Work survey at any time. The insights from the survey can help you make better decisions about how to build and strengthen your approach to adopting AI in your company. Additionally, gathering feedback from employees is crucial to support effective change management, particularly given the ongoing evolution of AI in the workplace.

Some of the use cases for the survey include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessing the readiness for AI adoption in your organization

  • Monitoring the impact and effectiveness of AI

  • Guiding strategic decisions about AI, helping refine strategies, allocate resources and provide more targeted interventions

  • Supporting change management initiatives

  • Encouraging exploration and experimentation of AI technologies

  • Understanding the current state of employee readiness and capabilities.

Designing your approach

First of all, decide on the whether you wish to run a standalone survey, or prefer to include questions in a broader survey, such as your engagement survey.

1. Run a dedicated survey

  • We recommend using our AI Effectiveness at Work Template (20 Question Pulse Survey), which is accessible directly on the Culture Amp platform as a template.

  • All survey templates can be viewed in the Template Library. To access, click Create survey from the Surveys page.

2. Include AI effectiveness questions as a baseline in another survey

If you'd prefer to take a lighter-touch approach, we recommend including these five baseline questions in an existing survey (like your engagement survey):

  1. I believe AI will improve how we work at %ACCOUNT_NAME% in the next 6–12 months

  2. Our leaders have clearly explained how we plan to use AI to reach our goals

  3. My manager shares examples of how AI can support our goals or workflows

  4. I feel confident using AI in my day-to-day work

  5. How would you describe your current use of AI tools in your work?

    • Non-user – I do not use AI tools for work purposes

    • Light user – I have tried AI tools a few times, but don't use them daily

    • Regular user – I use AI tools daily or almost daily for some tasks

    • Power user – I use AI tools extensively for multiple types of tasks

After the survey: Taking action

While we've outlined a range of actions and strategic recommendations within these areas, it's crucial to remember that your specific focus and the priority of these actions should be directly informed by your survey results and unique business priorities.

These suggestions serve as a robust starting point, designed to spark inspiration to support your organization forward in its AI journey.
