Welcome to the FAQ guide for 1-on-1 conversations! Here, we address some of the most common questions about the new 1-on-1s experience to help you get the most out of it.

Updating conversations

What happens once a 1-on-1 conversation is set up?

Both participants can access and update the conversation, add agenda items, or change their input.

Can managers and employees both add and see each other’s agenda items?

Yes, both managers and employees can add and view each other’s agenda items and notes.

What happens when there’s a change in reporting lines?

When reporting lines change, any new manager or direct reports will automatically appear in your Active conversations. Former direct reports will stay in your Active conversations until you archive them. If a former direct report is no longer an active Culture Amp user, they’ll be marked as 'inactive'.

Why can’t I reset the check-in slider to the default position once it’s moved?

The slider starts in the middle (5.5 on a 1-10 scale) by default, but it’s not meant to be a rating. It's designed to help you choose a specific number, not stay neutral. Once moved, it can’t return to 5.5 because we only record whole numbers, which is why it might feel like you can't choose a neutral option.

Can I convert a direct report 1-on-1 conversation to a colleague conversation?

Unfortunately, you can’t convert the conversation directly. We recommend archiving the existing conversation and setting up a new one as a "Colleague conversation." While the notes won’t transfer, this approach allows you to use the more appropriate format.

Can I reset a 1-on-1 conversation to make previous items disappear?

You can't reset an existing conversation, but you can create a new one to achieve a similar outcome. Just archive the current conversation by clicking the three dots in the conversation view and selecting "archive." Then, you can start a new 1-on-1 conversation using "Meet with anyone."

Can you update 1-on-1 topics via Slack?

No, you can't update topics via Slack right now. However, it's something we're considering for next year. Currently, you can only receive 1-on-1 notifications through Slack.

Tracking and customization

How can Account Admins track 1-on-1 meeting engagement?

Account Admins can monitor 1-on-1 engagement through the participation report, which offers statistics on meeting activity. For more details, please refer to the 1-on-1 Conversations usage report support guide.

Can I track check-in responses over time?

Recent updates allow you to view a dated comparison of Check-in sliders after submission, helping you track changes over time and gain insight into historical trends in your ongoing 1-on-1s.

How can I set up 1-on-1’s for the organization using a new template?

Currently, it’s not possible to create or upload a custom 1-on-1 template for your organization. However, each individual can customize their own agenda items, such as adding their own topics and notes, during their 1-on-1.

Can I customize the 1-on-1 template to include private notes or have the same topics/questions each time?

No, those features are not available in the new 1-on-1s at this time.

Can I customize parts of 1-on-1s, like check-in questions or reminder notifications?

While agenda items and notes can be customized by both participants, check-in questions and reminder notifications cannot be changed.

Is there a calendar integration?

Instead of traditional calendar integration, you can now set up a meeting in your calendar through a simple link in your 1-on-1s conversation view. Just click Calendar Event, choose your preferred calendar (Google, Outlook, or iCal), and a meeting with the other party will be automatically created, including a link to the 1-on-1 in the meeting details.

Is it possible to customize recurring times for 1-on-1s?

No, our 1-on-1 experience doesn’t use calendar integration or scheduling.

Will overall company participation stats be added to 1-on-1s?

Overall company participation stats aren’t available yet, but we plan to add them soon.

Can I export the 1-on-1s data?

Direct export functionality for 1-on-1s isn’t available in Culture Amp. However, you can press Command + P (Mac) or Ctrl + P (PC) to print the content and save it as a PDF.

Are 1-on-1s available in languages in addition to English?

Yes, 1-on-1s are available in our Tier 1 and Tier 2 languages.

What counts as activity within a 1-on-1?

Activity can include any of the following:

  • Adding a topic to the conversation (including submitting a new slider response).

  • Updating a topic, which includes:

    • Adding a note to a topic.

    • Marking a topic as discussed or undiscussed.

    • Editing, reordering, or deleting a topic (including updating a submitted slider).

  • Unarchiving a discussed conversation.

How will I know if check-in sliders haven’t been completed by a direct report?

Managers will see an in-agenda status update letting them know if their direct reports still need to fill out Check-in sliders. This ensures you’re aware of any outstanding updates before the 1-on-1 meeting.

Notifications and reminders

Are there reminder emails for 1-on-1s?

Yes, there are two types of notifications:

  • When there has been activity on a conversation, we notify the other party.

  • If there hasn’t been any activity for 14, 28, or 36 days, we send a reminder to both parties.

Is there a way to customize, limit, or unsubscribe from 1-on-1 notifications?

Currently, there’s no option to unsubscribe from 1-on-1 notifications, but we’re working on a solution.

Can notifications be disabled?

Yes, notifications for the 1-on-1s can be disabled for all users. Your Culture Amp Account Administrator can request this by replying "Ask a Person" in a Support Conversation. It typically takes 1-2 business days.

Setting up and managing 1-on-1s

Does the manager or employee need to re-establish a meeting in the new 1-on-1s?

No, there’s no need to re-establish the meeting. When a direct report is assigned to a manager in their user profile, a new conversation is automatically created.

Will Managers need to schedule a date and time for their 1-on-1s with Direct Reports?

No, Managers don’t need to manually schedule 1-on-1s. These conversations will automatically appear under Active Conversations. Just click View Conversation to open, update, or add agenda items, and the other party will be notified.

Can direct reports set up 1-on-1s with their manager?

Yes, employees can initiate conversations with managers, direct reports, or colleagues, regardless of hierarchy.

Do historical 1-on-1s appear in the new 1-on-1s?

Yes, future-dated 1-on-1 items are migrated as "undiscussed." Past 1-on-1s are moved to the "Discussed" section, with the original scheduled date preserved as the discussion date.

How are the 1-on-1s set up to auto-populate managers and employees?

The auto-population of managers and employees in 1-on-1s depends on the following:

  • Manager Emails: Ensuring that your employees have a manager email assigned.

  • Hierarchy Setup: Ensuring that a valid hierarchy has been set up.

Are preferred names used in 1-on-1s?

Yes, preferred names are shown only in the conversation view. In all other views, the full legal name is used. If no preferred name is set, the full name will be displayed in all views.

Can you download the notes within a 1-on-1?

Currently, you can't download the notes directly. The suggested workaround is to copy and paste them.

Is it expected behavior that inactive users are appearing in 1-on-1s?

Yes, inactive users can still appear in historical 1-on-1s, as the platform preserves these records for continuity and reference. However, inactive users won’t show up in new or active 1-on-1s moving forward.

What is the “Created for” tag?

The "Created for" tag shows which participant (usually the IC) is responsible for completing Check-in sliders or adding to Highlights & challenges. It helps clarify each person’s role in preparing for the 1-on-1.

User access and permissions

Who can delete topics within the 1-on-1s?

Participants of the conversation can only delete the topics they’ve created themselves. For example, a direct report can’t delete a topic written by their manager.

Can you add collaborators to 1-on-1 conversations?

Adding multiple collaborators to 1-on-1s isn’t available. However, you can use the “Meet with anyone” functionality to have a 1-on-1 with anyone in your organization, regardless of hierarchy.

Do managers have access to their direct reports' 1-on-1s from their previous manager?

No, if a direct report changes managers, the new manager won’t have access to the 1-on-1s from the previous manager.

Who can see the content of a 1-on-1 conversation?

Only the two participants in the 1-on-1 conversation can view its content.

Do Account Admins get access to view the content of 1-on-1 conversations for other employees?

No, 1-on-1 data is private and accessible only to the two individuals involved in the conversation.

Reporting and analytics

Is trend reporting on the check-in sliders available?

While full trend reporting isn’t available yet, recent improvements allow for dated comparisons of Check-in responses directly in the agenda. This lets you track progress over time within your 1-on-1 meetings.

How is the 1-on-1 usage report calculated?

For the usage report, we only count usage when a topic has been added or updated.

Is every 1-on-1 meeting counted in the usage stats?

Will there be reporting available for 1-on-1s with people other than my manager?

Yes! Over the next few months, we’ll be expanding reporting for admins and managers to include 1-on-1s with anyone in the organization. This includes improved participation reports and insights like anonymous slider usage, so you can track trends—such as wellbeing—in specific departments.
