What is Suggest Improvements?

Suggest Improvements is an AI-powered tool designed to help employees and managers write feedback that’s specific, actionable, and balanced. It was created to address the challenges of inconsistent or generic feedback, which can often arise due to time constraints or uncertainty about how to phrase constructive comments.

By analyzing your written feedback, Suggest Improvements provides guidance to make it more effective in a few simple clicks.

How Does Suggest Improvements Work?

When you write feedback—whether in a manager review, peer feedback, or upward feedback—you’ll see an Improve button. Clicking it prompts AI to analyze your feedback and offer suggestions based on four key qualities, as defined by Culture Amp’s People Science team:

  • Specific: Specific feedback is descriptive rather than general.

  • Impact: What resulted from the action or behaviour.

  • Actionable: Promotes growth mindset by suggesting future-forward actions

  • Objective: What was observed and its impact rather than subjective judgments.

Tip: For a deeper dive into what makes feedback truly effective, check out our Detailed Explanation of the Feedback Characteristics.

Where Can You Use Suggest Improvements?

Suggest Improvements is available in the following areas only:

  • Manager Reviews – Managers can use it when writing feedback during performance reviews.

  • Peer and Upward Feedback (PAUF) – Employees can use it to improve feedback given to peers or managers.

In all contexts, the Improve button appears once you’ve written at least 100 characters of feedback.

How to Enable Suggest Improvements

By default, Suggest Improvements is turned off. To activate it, a Performance administrator must enable it at the account level, which automatically applies the feature to all performance review cycles—including draft, scheduled, live, and closed cycles.

  1. Log in to Culture Amp and go to Performance > Performance cycles under the Admin menu.

  2. Click AI settings.

  3. In the modal, toggle the AI settings on (this will enable both Suggest Improvements and Highlights and Opportunities)

If the toggle is already on, the Improve button will automatically appear in manager reviews and peer and upward feedback.

Note: This setting applies to all performance cycles once enabled. You cannot enable it for individual cycles only.

How to Use Suggest Improvements

  1. Write at least 100 characters of feedback.

  2. Click Improve to receive AI-generated suggestions.

  3. Review the suggestions and revise the feedback accordingly.

  4. Revise and personalize your feedback before submitting.

Suggestions are optional and editable. They’re there to guide, not replace, your own insights.

Tip: Learn how Suggest Improvements helps managers and employees give effective feedback during performance reviews in the Science Behind Suggest Improvements article.

Disabling AI Suggest Improvements

To turn Suggest Improvements off:

  1. Go to Admin > Performance > Performance cycles

  2. Click AI settings

  3. Toggle off AI Suggest Improvements

This disables the feature across all contexts (manager reviews and peer and upward feedback).

Supported Languages

Suggest Improvements works in various languages, as long as they have been enabled in a multilingual performance cycle. AI performance varies depending on the language used, so the quality of suggestions may differ slightly for each employee. The languages fall into two support levels:

Support Level

Description

Languages

Fully Supported

AI is highly proficient, providing the most accurate and refined suggestions.

English, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish

Supported

Functional and usable, but AI suggestions may be less refined than in fully supported languages.

Chinese Traditional, Danish, Dutch, French Canadian, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Polish, Russian, Spanish LATAM, Swedish, Thai, Ukrainian, Vietnamese.

Employees using a 'Supported' language will see an in-platform note explaining that the AI proficiency may be limited compared to 'Fully Supported' languages. This warning will be displayed in the user's preferred language, but is shown in English in the example below.

Unsupported Languages

If an employee's preferred language is not listed in the table, they will not be able to use the Suggest Improvements feature at this time, but we are continuously working to expand our language capabilities.

For more information on language support across AI features, including Suggest Improvements, see Supported Languages in Culture Amp.

Note: If you notice translation problems with the Suggest Improvements button, or any other text within the feature when using a supported language, please submit feedback using the "Is this helpful?" (thumbs-up/thumbs-down) icons located at the bottom of the feature panel.

Troubleshooting/FAQs

Can I enable Suggest Improvements on a draft cycle?

Yes. Once the feature is turned on at the account level, it applies to all cycles: draft, scheduled, live, and closed.

Can I enable Suggest Improvements for specific performance cycles?

No. This feature is enabled at the account level. Once turned on, it will be applied to all of your performance cycles, regardless of status - draft, live, scheduled and closed.

Can Suggest Improvements be used for self-reflections?

Currently, Suggest Improvements is only available for manager reviews and peer and upward feedback.

Does the AI consider company-specific values or competencies when generating suggestions?

The AI focuses on general feedback qualities (specificity, impact, actionability, and objectivity) but does not currently tailor suggestions based on custom company values or competencies.

Does it write the feedback for employees?

No, Suggest Improvements doesn’t write feedback for your employees. It’s a guidance tool that reviews what employees write and offers suggestions to make it more effective.

Can employees edit the AI-generated suggestions before incorporating them into their feedback?

Yes. The AI provides guidance, not ready-made text. Employees should use these tips to craft their own clear, personalized, and actionable feedback.

What happens if I disagree with the AI suggestions?

You are encouraged to trust your judgment. The AI is a tool to assist you, but your own insights and knowledge of the employee’s performance should guide the final feedback.

Is there a limit to how many times I can use Suggest Improvements?

Yes. You can use the Improve button up to 50 times per user, per 24 hours. If you go over the limit, you’ll see a notification letting you know.

Why isn’t the AI suggesting improvements to my feedback

If your response is too short (less than 100 characters), the AI may not be able to generate any suggestions. Try adding a bit more context to get more helpful guidance.

Can Suggest Improvements be used in self-reflections?

No, Suggest Improvements is not available for other feedback types such as self-reflections, anytime feedback, and manager-requested feedback outside of a performance cycle. It is currently only available for Manager Reviews and Peer and Upward Feedback in a performance cycle

Why are suggested improvements showing in English, even though I'm using a supported language?

This may mean the performance cycle you're accessing was not set up to include support for your preferred language, in which case the suggestions will appear in the default language set for the cycle. We would recommend checking with your performance administrator who created the cycle, to ensure your language was enabled when they were setting up the multilingual performance cycle.

Additionally, if you are assigned a supported language (such as French) but type your review responses in English (or another supported language enabled for the cycle), the generated suggestions will respect the language you typed the response in, rather than the preferred language you are assigned.
