Who can use this feature?

Available on:

  • All Culture Amp subscriptions that include Engagement or Effectiveness (Manager and Team Effectiveness surveys).

Comparisons help you see the progress of your organization over time. When evaluating your survey results, you can add comparisons manually or take advantage of automated comparisons. Automated comparisons are available for internal comparisons only. The option to load your comparisons manually however is available for both external benchmarks and internal comparisons.

Before you begin

  • To ensure consistency and accuracy it is best to finalize your survey design before adding comparisons.

  • Be aware that editing an existing comparison—whether by deleting, renaming or modifying question matches—will remove all manual demographic comparisons. Make sure your question matches are finalized before requesting demographic comparisons to be loaded.

Tip: Take our on-demand, self-guided course: design your survey with benchmark considerations to deepen your understanding of survey design. Learn which modifications can make a question unusable for benchmarking and how these changes affect your reports.

Understanding comparison types

To get the most value out of analyzing your survey data, it's important to understand the various comparison options. In this guide, we will focus on the two primary comparison types and provide detailed instructions on how to load them, either manually or using the automated comparisons feature. For more information on our other comparison options, check out the Guide to using comparisons.

Primary comparison types

  • Internal comparison: Compare your results to your organization's historical survey data conducted within Culture Amp.

  • External benchmark: Benchmark your survey results against external benchmarks provided by Culture Amp.

Load your internal comparisons and external benchmarks manually

Follow these steps to manually load internal comparisons and external benchmarks:

From your Surveys page, select Edit survey

Click on the Comparisons page and scroll to the bottom.

Use the Benchmarks or Surveys drop-down to select a comparison.

Click Add benchmark or Add survey to confirm your selection.

Go through the question matching process.

After matching the questions, click to Save changes.

Tip: To ensure a fair comparison and that you're comparing apples to apples, only align your survey questions with comparison options that have similar intent. Unsure if you should match a question? Consult our training on the 3 changes that we recommend not benchmarking

Your new comparison will appear under the Report comparisons section of your Comparisons page. You can easily manage it by renaming, deleting, or reordering it using the ellipsis.

Load comparisons at the demographic level

If you wish to compare data at the demographic level, follow these steps:

Navigate to your Surveys > Comparisons page.

Click the ellipsis icon next to the survey comparison.

Click Demographic matches > Request to compare demographics

Enter the names of the surveys and the demographics you want to compare.

Submit the request

This action notifies our Product Support Team to load your requested demographic-level comparisons.

Load internal comparisons using automated comparisons

Automated comparisons are generated automatically for your survey report on the Comparisons page. These comparisons include Internal closed surveys of the same type with at least one matching rating style question. Here's how to load them:

Navigate to your Surveys > Comparisons page.

Click Add next to the survey you want to compare your results to.

Use the ellipsis next to the comparison to:

  • View and edit question or demographic matches

  • Rename the comparison

  • Set it as the default

  • Delete it

Tip: You can only compare rating-style questions.

View question matches

You can review your question matches at any time by clicking on the Comparison Name from your surveys Comparisons page.

Perfect matches are hidden by default to highlight manually matched or unmatched questions.

Export demographic level comparisons

Full visibility of demographic values matched (automatically or manually) between the current survey and the comparison survey is available via an export.

Click the ellipsis next to the comparison on the Surveys > Comparisons page

Select the Demographic matches option

Export CSV.

View comparison data in reports

Click View reports to open your Admin report.

Choose your comparison survey or benchmark from the Compared to drop-down for a company-wide overview.

For demographic-level comparison scores, click Add filter and pick your desired demographic group from the drop-down.

Note: The Summary report page can display only one historical comparison and one benchmark comparison. The historical survey comparison will be the first one you load, while the external benchmark comparison will be the most recent one you add.

FAQs

Why am I not seeing comparison survey data?

When comparing your current survey to historical data:

  • Factor-level Comparison: You'll receive a factor-level comparison if the number of questions remains the same, all questions are matched and the factor name stays consistent.

  • Question-level Comparison: You will see this if the questions are identical between surveys. Remember, you can manually match questions when you load the comparison, if the meaning and intent of the question remains the same.

When comparing your current survey to external benchmarks:

  • Factor-level Comparison: You'll receive a factor-level comparison if no customized items have been added. Note that you may remove items and still have a factor comparison to the industry benchmark.

  • Question-level Comparison: You will see this if the questions are identical or have been manually matched when you loaded the comparison.
