Overview

Demographic piping within a survey design has been designed to enable customers to pull any value assigned to your users in your User File into survey questions and section descriptions.

A common use case for demographic piping is when asking questions about management to employees with multiple managers. Piping the manager name into the question helps clarify who the participant should give feedback about. For example, when a participant views the survey they will see "Rod genuinely cares about my wellbeing" instead of "My manager genuinely cares about my wellbeing".

** If you have a survey with multiple languages enabled, the piping will be displayed in English in all Languages.

Which surveys support demographic piping?

  • Engagement Surveys

  • Experience Surveys

  • Effectiveness Surveys

    • 180s: Manager Effectiveness, Team Effectiveness

    • 360s: Only supports piping the demographics of the participant taking the survey

Where can demographic piping be used?

  • Question level

    • Question text

  • Section level

    • Short description

    • Long description

File preparation and format

A file needs to be generated and sent through to Culture Amp Product Support. Once this has been received, we will send this file through to our Product Team to implement.

You will need to ensure that you are saving this file as a .txt file.

  • Replacement Code:This is the code that will be visible in the survey design. When a participant is viewing the survey, the demographic value assigned to that user for the demographic you are choosing to pipe through will appear.

  • Fallback:If a user does not have a demographic value for the Demographic you are choosing to pipe through, this value will appear.

  • Piped_demographic_question_code:The demographic you are choosing to pipe through to the survey (please provide the Title of the demographic, such as 'Manager' or 'Location'; we'll convert it to the back end code prior to implementation).

- replacement_code: '%My_manager%'

fallback: My manager

piping:piped_demographic_question_code: hooli.manager

- replacement_code: '%my_location%'

fallback: my location

piping:piped_demographic_question_code: hooli.location

Replacement codes

replacement_codes are case sensitive. %My_manager% is not the same as %My_Manager%. If the replacement_code in your survey design does not match the replacement_code in your .txt file, piping will not take place and the replacement_code will appear for the participant instead of pulling the expected demographic value.

replacement_codes do not support special characters, such as brackets or spaces. For example: %Company (Eng)% cannot be supported and should be provided as %Company_Eng% instead.

Fallback

We strongly recommend that the replacement_code should replicate your fallback and vice versa. This means adding a '%' as the prefix to your fallback and replacing spaces with '_'

For example:

Question: My manager genuinely cares about my wellbeing

Question after replacement code is included: %My_manager% genuinely cares about my wellbeing

Fallback value: My manager

Piped Demographic question codes

Please provide the Title of the demographic, such as 'Manager' or 'Location' (we'll convert it to the back end code prior to implementation). Please ensure you copy the Title of the demographic exactly; you can check this in Account Admin > Account Demographics page:

Survey Design Preparation

You will now need to prepare the survey. This will ensure that when demographic piping has been implemented, you are able to test the values as a participant would see these when completing a survey response.

You will need to replace the text in the survey design with the replacement_code(s) that you have included in your .txt file.

For example:

Question: My manager genuinely cares about my wellbeing

Question after replacement code is included: %My_manager% genuinely cares about my wellbeing

Implementing your demographic piping request

Now that you have prepared your file and your survey, you will need to reach out to Culture Amp Product Support so that we process this request.

The request may take up to 3-5 business days to complete.

Once the request has been completed, we will notify via email so that you can preview your survey as displayed to your participants prior to launch.

Previewing your demographic piping

Now it's time to see the magic happen! You will need to navigate to your Survey's Questions page. In the top right hand corner, you will notice a Preview button which you will need to select.

Once you are in the preview state, you will notice that a blue banner will appear at the top of your survey preview which will allow you to select a demographic value to preview your survey as.

You will then be shown a list of values to select. Please note that if you have a large number of demographics and demographic values, this next step may take some time to load in your survey preview.

Once the value has been selected, you will be able to see this value populate in the survey where you have added your replacement_codes to your survey design questions or sections. Please note that if you have a large number of demographics and demographic values, this next step may take some time to load in your survey preview.
