Why assign roles?

Assigning employees to specific roles within Career paths helps clarify the competencies needed for growth, outlines expectations for their current position, and maps out the next steps in their career journey.

Steps to assign employees to roles

Navigate to Career Paths

  • Log In: Access your account, click on the Development drop-down and select Career paths

  • Assign Roles: From the navigation panel click on Assign roles to start the role assignment process.

Select a Career path role

  • Choose a Job group: Identify the job group for which you want to assign roles.

  • Edit demographics: Select Edit demographic for the specific role you wish to assign to employees.

Create an assignment rule

You can assign roles based on demographic data in two ways:

Option 1: Assign the role to employees who match ALL selected demographics

Example: Assign the role of Senior Engineer to all employees at Level 3 in the Engineering department.

Option 2: Assign the role to employees who match ANY of the selected demographics

Example: Assign the role of People Leader to employees identified as either Development Leads, Level 4, or Level 5.

Click Update to confirm the assignment.

Note: If an employee's demographic data changes, they will be automatically re-assigned to a role that aligns with their new demographic status. For instance, a promotion to Level 3 Engineer will trigger an automatic update to Senior Engineer in Culture Amp.

Troubleshooting common issues

Verify demographic accuracy:

  • Check user profiles: Go to the employee's user profile under your Account > Settings > Users page to check their demographic data.

  • Adjust data: If data is incorrect or missing, update it directly in the profile. For HRIS sync users, also correct the data in your HRIS.

Ensure exact demographic match for role assignment:

  • Review role criteria: Confirm that the demographic matches the defined criteria exactly. For example, if you have defined the demographic for a role as ‘Job title’ is ‘Senior Engineer’, then ‘senior engineer’, “Snr engineer” or “SeniorEngineer” would not be a match.

  • Correct mismatches: Look for typos, missing spaces, or differences in capitalization. Fix mismatches through the user profile, CSV upload, or directly in your HRIS.

Adjust demographics for role assignment:

  • Review current demographics: If you're struggling to find the right combination of demographics to assign the desired roles, there may be missing demographics in your account. Check your Settings > Account Demographics page for existing options.

  • Edit or create demographics: Navigate to Settings > Account Demographics to create new or edit existing demographics.

Example: if you want to apply a leadership competency framework to all managers in your organization but lack a demographic to identify them, simply create a new demographic called ‘Manager.’ This will allow you to accurately assign roles within the framework.
