Welcome to the FAQ guide for Goals (new)! Here, we address some of the most common questions about the new goals experience to help you get the most out of it.

Note: Any dates provided are planned and subject to change. Features and timelines may be adjusted, so stay updated with the latest information by referring to our product release updates.

Notifications


Do Goal Creators receive a notification when they’re assigned the role?

No, currently Goal Creators do not receive a notification.

When will notification emails be available?

Notification emails are in progress, with availability targeted for early 2025.

Is there a notification when a manager or individual updates a goal?

Currently, there are no notifications for goal updates.

Configuring goals


Is it possible to have more than two individual Goal types?

Not at this time.

Is it possible to set a goal date to a past date?

Yes this is possible.

When will the new key results categories be available?

The new key results categories are expected around late 2024 or early 2025.

Is it possible to use decimals in metrics for Key Results?

Yes, decimals can be used in metrics for Key Results in Goals (new).

Can you copy goals?

Yes! Copying goals is now available.

Will there be an option to restrict who can be added as a Goal Owner?

Currently, there is no feature to restrict Goal Owners. This feature is not planned at the moment.

Are there any restrictions with goal alignments?

No, there are no restrictions! You can align goals downwards, upwards, and sideways:

  • Sideways: An individual goal can be a primary to another individual goal.

  • Upwards: A team goal can add a department goal as it's primary.

  • Downwards: A company goal can include a department goal as a supporting.

Can goals only be aligned to goals within the same group?

No, a user can align their goal to any goal they have permission to view, regardless of group membership. For example, if the Product group's goals are visible to everyone, someone in Sales could align a Sales goal to a Product goal.

Updating Goals


Can admins update the owner of a goal if the employee has left the organization?

Yes, admins and another goal owner can update the goal owner.

Does changing a key result's status to "completed" automatically update its percentage?

No, marking a key result as "completed" means you're done working on it, but it doesn't automatically update the percentage or confirm you've reached the target value.

Can managers edit any goal owned by their direct reports?

Not currently. Managers can only update the progress of a published goal; they can’t edit the goal itself.

Can we turn off the ability for employees to leave comments on different goal types?

Not at the moment. It's an all-or-nothing feature — we can either turn it off for the entire account or have it enabled for all goal types.

Can we restrict employees from changing goals, and apply this to specific goal types?

Not at the moment.

What happens to a supporting goal when its primary goal is deleted?

The supporting goal still exists, but it will no longer be aligned to the deleted primary goal. It essentially remains as a standalone goal.

Integration and visibility


Will indirect managers be able to see the goals created by their indirect reports?

Not yet, but we’re working on it! Indirect manager visibility for goals is on our development roadmap.

What is the goal visibility like for Managers and HRBPs?

  • Managers: Can see and update progress on their direct reports' goals, no matter the visibility settings, if their direct report owns the goals or key results.

  • Admins: Have full access to view and edit all goals.

  • Future roles: We’ll be introducing roles like Goal Admin and HRBP soon for even more visibility and management options.

Can you restrict goal visibility at the Admin level?

Currently, Admin visibility cannot be restricted. By default, individual goals are private, visible only to the goal owner, their manager, and Admins.

Does the new Goals feature integrate with Self-reflections and Manager reviews?

Yes, goals created with the new experience will be visible and integrated into both Self-reflections and Manager reviews.

Will the original version of goals (classic) and the new goals experience be available at the same time?

During the EAP phase, admins can view both versions. Once the transition to Goals (new) is complete, only Goals (new) will be available to all users.

If a direct report gets assigned a new manager, will the new manager be able to see the goals they've already created?

Yes, if the account’s hierarchy is updated correctly, the new manager will see the direct report’s existing goals, while the old manager will no longer have access.

How can managers see the goals of their indirect reports?

A workaround is to set the visibility of indirect reports' goals to "everyone" or "specific people," then add the indirect managers as specific people so they can view the goals.

Can I hide the Goal tree?

Yes, we can turn it off! Just reply with "Ask a Person" in a support conversation to speak with a Product Support Specialist.

Do the goals of a direct report appear in the employee profile during Manager reviews and Self-reflections?

Yes, the goals are visible in the employee profile view for both Managers and Employees.

Are goals visible in a direct report’s 1-on-1?

Not right now, but we’re planning to add this feature in the future!

What goals show up on the home feed?

The home feed displays up to 25 goals that:

  • Are not marked as Draft or Complete

  • Have a due date within the current year

  • Are owned by the user (including Key Result ownership)

These goals are sorted by the most recent updates.

Can we create different org structures for different groups?

Yes, you can create multiple org structures! However, if employees belong to more than one structure, they’ll see all organization units across those structures in the group filter options on the list view.

Do private goals show up in the goals tree and related metrics in Goals (new)?

Yes, private goals do show up, but only for the people who have permission to view them.

Can we set a default visibility for goals, and customize it for each goal type?

Not currently. The default visibility for all goals is set to"group member".

Goals reporting, imports and exports


Can you bulk import Goals (new)?

Yes! Bulk importing individual Goals (new) is now available. Refer to the Individual Goals (new) import template article for more details.

Where can I export all goals?

Admins can download a CSV of all employees and their goals through the Employee Usage Report. All users can download any goals they have access to through the Goals (new) report export.

Is there an audit log available for Admins and Managers to track when an employee updates their goals?

Currently, goal edits are visible in the feed on the Culture Amp Home page. A detailed audit log is not available at this time.

When will the dashboards for Goals (new) be available?

The Goals (new) dashboard is in progress and is expected to be available in early 2025.

Will group goals be included in the usage report?

A feature to filter by group before downloading the usage report is planned for late 2024.

Hierarchies


What’s the behavior with and without a validated hierarchy in Goals (new)?

With a validated hierarchy, Goals (new) will use this to determine a user’s manager and provide manager-level visibility. Without a validated hierarchy, this visibility may not be accurately assigned.

What happens to goals when the hierarchy and org structure are updated?

If goals are created under a specific org structure and that structure changes, the goals might become orphaned. We're working on a solution to preserve these goals with a snapshot in time, expected to be available later in 2024.

Additional features


Is it possible to comment on goals?

Yes! Employees can now add and view comments on goals in Goals (new), promoting better communication, tracking, and collaboration around goal progress. Check out our updating progress and completing Goals (new) article for more information.

Since it’s not possible to add two values under one demographic, is there a workaround to reflect this in the org structure?

You can assign the employee as the goal creator for each separate business area while keeping the rest of the structure unchanged. Alternatively, you could add a higher layer in the structure, which can then break down into smaller departments.

Can you filter goals?

Yes, you can filter and sort goals in Goals (new). Sorting options are available for due dates and last updated.

Will there be a concept of launching a goal cycle?

Yes, it's on our roadmap for 2025.
