AI Coach in Develop is an AI-powered assistant built into the Develop module that helps you create and refine your development plan. Coach is available throughout the development planning process to provide guidance, answer questions, and offer suggestions as you work on your goals and growth areas.

Coach uses information from your development plan, including your focus areas, goals, strengths, and growth areas, to provide personalised guidance. The more detail you add to your plan, the more specific Coach's suggestions will be.

What Coach in Develop Can Assist With

  • Choosing focus areas — Get guidance on what to prioritise in your development plan based on your goals and current situation

  • Setting goals — Understand how ambitious your goals should be and what makes them effective

  • Creating a strong development plan — Learn what elements make a development plan successful and actionable.

What Data Can Coach in Develop Access?

By default, Coach in Develop has access to information from your development plan foundations and current plan details. It also has access to your performance review, self-reflection, and anytime feedback data, but will not use this information unless you tell it to. If you'd like Coach to consider that information, you can prompt Coach accordingly and describe relevant points in your conversation.

Coach in Develop has access to:

  • Any details entered on your development plan

  • Role and competency data for assigned roles via Career Pathways, including job group, track, role title, role description, and competency names/descriptions.

  • Manager Reviews

  • Peer & Upward Feedback

  • Anytime Feedback

  • Shoutouts

Coach in Develop does not have access to:

  • Previous Development Plans

  • Historical Goals

  • Competency Levels

Starting a Conversation

Coach will open in a sidebar automatically when you create a new development plan or continue an existing development plan. Follow these steps to begin a conversation:

  1. From your Home page, access Development > Development Plans

  2. Create a new plan (or continue one already in progress)

  3. While working on your development plan Coach will open automatically.

    • Click the blue Coach button in the top navigation if you have closed the coach window and need to reopen it.

  4. Coach will provide some suggested prompts to get you started.

  5. Click any suggested prompt, or type your own question in the chat.

Note: While Coach is available when working through a new development plan or continuing an incomplete one, it will not be available if editing a plan that has already been completed.

Suggested prompts:

  • How do I know what to focus on?

  • How ambitious should my goals be?

  • What makes a good development plan?

The three suggested prompts are intentionally designed to be useful throughout the entire development planning process. They address fundamental questions that are relevant regardless of which page you're on. You can always type your own specific question at any time.

Tip: Find out more about the prompt design and suggested use cases in The Science Behind AI Coach.

Page Specific Prompts

As you move through different steps in your development plan, Coach offers additional contextual prompts tailored to the page you're on. These prompts appear in Ask Coach banners on specific pages and automatically relate to the task you're working on.

When you click a contextual prompt from an Ask Coach banner, the prompt is automatically sent to Coach, and Coach provides guidance specific to that step in your development planning process.

Managing Your Conversations

Conversation persistence

Your conversation with Coach persists as you move between different pages of the development planning process. You can ask a question on one page, navigate to another page to make changes, and return to Coach to continue where you left off.

Your conversation also persists if you refresh the page, but not if you close your browser entirely.

Note: Your Coach conversation is tied to your development plan session. If you manually clear your URL parameters or navigate to your plan via a direct link without the session parameters, your conversation may not restore. To avoid this, use the in-app navigation rather than editing or copying the URL manually.

Closing Coach

To close Coach, click the close button (X) at the top of the Coach panel. Your conversation is saved within your current session, and you can reopen Coach at any time to continue where you left off.

Accessing past conversations

Coach saves all your conversations automatically to your Chat History. Within the Coach panel, you can access your session history to review past guidance, continue an earlier conversation, or switch between different Coach sessions.

  1. From the Coach window, click the options (...)

  2. Click Chat History

  3. Here you will see any previous conversations with Coach in Develop

  4. Click on a previous chat directly to re-access and continue the conversation

  5. Click the options of a previous chat to rename or delete it

Important Notes

  • Coach in Develop is only available while you're working on your development plan in the Develop module

  • Your conversation with Coach is private and only visible to you. Managers and admins cannot view your conversation history

  • Coach provides guidance based on the information in your development plan, so the more detail you provide, the more specific Coach's guidance will be

  • You may be asked to provide your consent to use coach, if it's the first time you've accessed a coach feature on your account

  • Coach conversations in Develop are separate from general AI Coach and Coach in Performance. A conversation started here will not appear in your general Coach history, and vice versa.
