A faster way to explore your Insight and Questions reports

Check out the updates now available in your Insight and Questions reports

Written by Jessie Walsh

From Monday 21 September, the Insight and Questions reports for your engagement surveys move onto the same modern reporting platform that already powers your Participation, Summary and Heatmap reports.

Here is what you can expect.

Your data is has not changed

Nothing about your results moves. Instead you will see:

  • The same scores, on the same factors and questions.

  • The same favorability logic, benchmarks and comparisons.

  • The same trends, calculated the same way.

  • The same filters. The separate work to rebuild report filters is not part of this release.

If a number looked a certain way last week, it will look that way after the update. This release changes how you get to the detail behind a number, not the number.

What has changed: the detail comes to you

Previously, selecting a factor or a question loads a separate page, and you use the back button to return to your report.

After this update, selecting a factor or a question opens a panel beside the report you are already reading. Your report stays on screen behind it, and so do your filters and your comparison. This panel is the Insights Explorer, and it is the same panel you may already use on your Heatmap.

The two standalone pages it replaces, the single factor report and the single question report, are going away.

If you used to do this, here is what you do now

Previously

Now

Select a factor, wait for the single factor report page to load

Select the factor, and a panel opens in place

Select a question, wait for the single question report page to load

Select the question, and the panel opens in place

Use the back button to get back to your report

You never left it, so there is nothing to go back to

Reapply filters after navigating back

Your filters and comparison stay applied throughout

Open a new page for each question inside a factor

Move from the factor to its questions, and into any one of them, inside the panel

Scroll down to find the top impacting questions

They now sit near the top of the report, above your other factors

On your Insight report

  • Key factors now use the same tile design as your Summary report, so the two reports feel consistent. If the Insight report suddenly looks familiar, that is why.

  • The top impacting questions move up the page, so they sit above your other factors rather than further down. The heading names your index factor, because these are the questions with the greatest impact on it across your whole organization.

  • Your factors are now grouped. Key factors come first, then your index factor's trend, then the top impacting questions, then your remaining factors below that. Every factor is still there, and you may need to scroll further to reach the ones lower down the page.

  • The action framework banner is gone, but taking action is not. What was removed is an inline prompt for a feature that had already been retired. Take action is still the primary button at the top of your report, and it still shows a count of the focus areas you have flagged. Flagging focus areas works exactly as it does today.

On your Questions report

  • The questions table now has its own scroll area with a heading that stays put as you scroll. Scroll inside the table rather than down the page.

  • The comment count carries the AI indicator for questions that have enough comments for an AI summary.

  • Free-text questions are not listed in the rating questions table. To read their summaries, go to the Free Text Questions tab and select a question there. It opens straight onto that question's comment summaries, since those questions collect comments rather than scores.

Two things look different

  • The spread of scores view has been redrawn. Where it previously plotted your demographic groups along a chart, it now lists each demographic with its spread and a range you can read directly, and you expand one to see its individual values.

  • Comparison now reads as a number rather than the small chart it used before. The value behind it is unchanged, and you can still sort by it as you always could. It is easier to scan, and it now reads the same way across all your reports.

What opens in the panel

Selecting a factor or a question shows its participation rate, favorable score, comparison and trend.

From there, what you can open depends on what you selected and how your report is set up:

  • The questions inside a factor, with their impact, favorable score and comparison. You can open any of them to go a level deeper.

  • Recommended focus areas, for your index factor and your key factors.

  • Spread of scores by demographic, when your report has demographics available to filter by. It is not shown for an eNPS factor. Your demographics are listed alphabetically, and expanding one shows its individual values ordered from lowest to highest favorable score.

  • AI comment summaries, on a question, when an administrator has enabled them and the question has 5 or more meaningful comments.

Your exports are unchanged, with one addition

Every export you use today still works. The Export menu can contain Print, Acrobat (.pdf), Excel (.xls), Comma separated (.csv), Raw data extract (.csv)… and Build PowerPoint (.ppt). Which of them you see depends on your own permissions and on how the report is set up, exactly as it does today.

New with this release, the panel exports on its own. With a factor or question open, the download icon in the panel header gives you a PDF of just that factor or question, which is useful for dropping a single result into a deck. It covers the whole factor or question, not only the screen you happen to be reading.

One export is going away. You can no longer export a single question as a PNG image, because that option lived on the single question page. Image export elsewhere is unaffected: you can still copy or download a report section as an image exactly as you do today. For a single question, use the panel's PDF export instead.

One thing worth doing before it arrives

  • Check any saved links or bookmarks that point to a single factor or single question report. They will still work, and they will take you to the report rather than to that specific factor or question, so you will need one extra click to get where you were going. If you keep a bookmark to a question you review every quarter, it is worth re-saving it after the update.

  • If your team shares screenshots of the single question page in a recurring pack, the panel's PDF export is the closest replacement.

Good to know

  • The Insights Explorer panel closes when you move to another report. Different reports have different factors and questions, so a panel carried across them would show you the wrong thing. Open it again on the report you have moved to.

  • The question list inside the Insights Explorer panel is ordered by favorable score, highest first, and does not have its own sort control. To sort questions freely, use the Questions report, where the columns are sortable.

  • A tile under Key factors cannot always be opened. The most common reason is that the factor's score is not statistically significant for the group you are looking at, which is expected rather than an error. Adjusting your filters to cover a larger group may change it. If no key factor tile opens at all, or one stays unavailable when you expect it to work, contact Support.

What this does not affect

This update covers the engagement survey Insight and Questions reports only. Your other reports are untouched by it:

  • 360 and Effectiveness Insight reports

  • Lifecycle Insight reports, including Onboarding and Exit

  • The Comments report

  • Summary, Heatmap and Participation, which already run on the modern platform

Who can use this

Anyone who can already open the Insight or Questions report will see the update, on Culture Amp packages that include Engagement. There is nothing to switch on. What you can open inside the panel depends on your access to the report and how it was configured, in exactly the way it does today.
