Set up a multilingual Performance review cycle

Choose cycle languages, add translations, and manage the multilingual review experience.

Written by Jessie Walsh

🔐 Who can use this feature?

Set up your Performance review cycle to run in more than one language, so each employee can complete their review in the language they prefer. You choose the cycle's languages when you create it, then add translations for your review questions before you schedule it.

Choose your cycle's languages

  1. Go to Performance > Admin: Performance Cycles, then select Create Cycle. Follow the setup steps to build your cycle as usual. See Launch a Unified Performance Review Cycle for the full walkthrough.

  2. In the Settings section, open the Languages dropdown.

    • If your cycle was created, or duplicated from a cycle created, before multilingual cycles were available, you won't see this option. Create a new cycle instead.

  3. Choose your Default Language. This is the language you'll write your review questions in.

  4. Choose your Additional Languages. You can select from more than 100 additional languages, each with automatic translation support. For how review cycle language options differ from Culture Amp's own translated products, see Check supported languages and product coverage.

  5. Select Next to move to the question editor.

💡 Tip: You can't change the Default Language once you move to the question editor. Choose carefully, since changing it later means starting a new cycle.

Write your questions and add translations

  1. Enter your review questions in the Default Language, as usual.

  2. Select Next to move to the Translations step.

  3. Use the Translated language dropdown to switch between the languages you selected, then add a translated cycle name and enter translations for each question.

  4. Or select Auto Translate to fill in translations automatically. Choose whether to translate only the questions that don't have a translation yet, or overwrite every translation that already exists. Review each automatic translation before you launch the cycle.

    • Any question without a translation shows the cycle's Default Language text instead.

Update translations with an XLSX file

  1. On the Translations step, select Export XLSX.

  2. Choose whether to include text formatting, or export a plain-text version.

  3. Select Export file to download the template.

  4. Edit the file: each language has its own tab, showing which part of the review each row belongs to (for example Manager Review or Self-reflection), the specific question, the original Default Language text, and your translation. Don't change the row or column titles. You can edit the file in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets, but save it back to .xlsx before you upload it.

  5. On the Translations step, select Import XLSX.

  6. Choose your updated .xlsx file.

  7. Select Import XLSX to upload it.

⚠️ Note: Uploading a file overwrites existing translations for every language included in that file.

Assign employees and check their preferred language

  1. On the employee selection step, assign employees to the cycle as usual.

  2. Check each employee's Preferred Language, set on their profile. It decides which language they see first, as long as that language is enabled in the cycle.

    • Only an Account Administrator or someone with Employee Data Full permissions can update an employee's Preferred Language. Employees can't update it themselves.

Review translations before you schedule the cycle

  1. On the Review Summary screen, look for yellow exclamation icons to spot missing translations.

  2. Select Edit Translations to update them.

  3. When you're ready, schedule the cycle as usual. See Launch a Unified Performance Review Cycle for sharing settings and launch timing.

What employees see

  • Employees see the cycle in their Preferred Language, as long as that language is enabled in the cycle.

  • They can switch languages at any time during the review using the Language Picker.

Troubleshooting

  • Import failed – Questions out of sync: Your file is outdated. Export a fresh file from the cycle and try the import again.

  • Import failed – Corrupted file: Check the file isn't corrupted, then re-save it and try again.

  • Import failed – Incorrect file format: Upload a .xlsx file. CSV and other formats aren't supported.

FAQ

Can I convert an existing single-language cycle into a multilingual one?

No, not directly. Create a new cycle and bring your content over, either by copying and pasting between language tabs, or by using Export XLSX and Import XLSX to transfer your questions in bulk.

Will employees' written answers be translated?

No. Open-ended responses stay in the language they were written in. This also applies to exports: predefined question text exports in each language, but written answers export in the language they were written in.

Can I edit translations after the cycle has been scheduled or is live?

Yes. Updates to a question don't automatically apply to every translated version, so update each language individually. See Tracking and Managing a Performance Review Cycle.

Does changing the review cycle's language also change the platform user interface?

No. The cycle's Language Picker only translates cycle content, such as questions and instructions. The rest of the Culture Amp interface follows the employee's Preferred Language on their profile, which only an Account Administrator or someone with Employee Data Full permissions can update. If the interface doesn't update right away, clear your browser's cache and cookies.
