Set up a multilingual Engagement survey

Add languages to your Engagement survey so employees can respond in their own language.

Written by Jessie Walsh

🔐 Who can use this feature?

Add one or more languages to your Engagement survey so employees can respond, and receive survey communications, in the language they're most comfortable with. You can enter translations yourself or ask Culture Amp to import a bulk translation file for you.

Where your language is translated, that covers more than just the questions:

  • The survey questions

  • What participants see while responding

  • Communications, like invites and reminders

  • Your report

  • The action planning screens

Finalize your content before you translate

Confirm your survey questions and communications in English before you start translating, since any changes you make afterward mean redoing that translation work. Finalizing the English version first also keeps every language consistent with the others.

Step 1: Ask Support to enable your languages

To add languages to your survey:

  1. Open a Support Conversation and share your survey name.

  2. List the languages you want to add, using their language codes (for example, es for Spanish or fr for French).

  3. If you already plan to upload translations in bulk, ask for the translation file for your questions, communications, or both, in the same conversation.

Support enables the languages on your survey and sends over any translation file you asked for. The order you list them in matters: if a participant's preferred language isn't on the survey, they see the first language configured on that survey instead, which may not be English.

Step 2: Add your translations

Add your translations directly in the survey, or upload them in a file. Use whichever fits the amount of translation work you have.

Translate directly in the survey (best for a few changes)

To translate survey questions:

  1. From Surveys, find your survey and select Edit Survey.

  2. Select the Questions tab, then select Edit Questions.

  3. Choose a language from the language dropdown to view that language's text.

  4. Add your translation to the question, factor, or description field you want to update.

  5. Repeat for each language, then select Done to save.

To translate communications, such as the survey invite email:

  1. Select the Communications tab, then select the communication you want to translate.

  2. Select Edit Email.

  3. Choose a language from the dropdown and add your translation to the email fields.

  4. Repeat for each language you've added, then select Save Changes.

Upload translations in bulk (best for a lot of translation work)

  1. Open a Support Conversation and ask for the bulk translation file for your survey questions, communications, or both.

  2. Fill in the file using the guidance below, then send it back through the same conversation.

  3. Culture Amp uploads your translations for you.

How to use your translation file

The questions file and the communications file each list your survey content alongside a column for your translation.

  • Keep any variables in the English text, such as %{recipient_name}, exactly as they appear, in your translation.

  • Match the meaning of the English text as closely as you can.

  • The Reporting Rules text is locked and can't be changed through this file.

Step 3: Preview your translations

Preview the survey and communications in each language you've added before you launch.

To preview survey questions:

  1. Select the Questions tab, then select Preview.

  2. Use the language dropdown to switch languages, and work through each question.

  3. Repeat for every language you've added.

To preview communications:

  1. Select the Communications tab, then select a communication.

  2. Choose a language from the dropdown and check the translated text.

  3. Confirm the Reporting Rules text reads correctly in each language.

💡 Tip: See Supported languages and product coverage to check exactly what's covered for each language, including reporting and action planning.

How participants experience the survey

  • If a participant's preferred language is enabled for your survey, they see the survey and its communications in that language, and can switch languages at any time.

  • If their preferred language isn't enabled, they see the survey's first configured language instead, which may not be English, with a dropdown to pick another available language.

  • To have everyone start in the survey's default language and choose their own from there, remove the preferred language value from a participant's profile before you launch. A preferred language set on a profile, and enabled for the survey, is always used as that participant's starting language instead.

Translate comments in your survey report

Enable comment translation so anyone viewing your report can read every comment in English, regardless of the language it was written in. By default, comments appear in the language they were originally written in.

See Translate Comments to English to set this up for your account.

Once it's on, open your survey report, select Translate comments to English, and every comment appears in English. Use the language filter to see which language each comment was originally written in.

FAQ

Can I enable languages on one survey without enabling them across my whole account?

Yes. Culture Amp enables languages per survey, so you don't need them enabled account-wide first.

What if the language I need isn't listed as supported?

Speak with your Customer Success Team before you plan a launch. See Supported languages and product coverage for the languages Culture Amp currently supports.

Can I view my survey report in the languages I've enabled?

Not by default, but Support can enable a language switcher for your report on request, so you can view it in any of your survey's enabled languages.
