How to download a raw data extract

Who is this guide for?

Survey Data Analyst

A raw data extract includes the personal information of survey respondents alongside their corresponding responses. When the raw data extract feature is enabled, survey participants will be notified by warning text included on the welcome page of the survey. If the survey does not have raw data enabled, the option to download this extract will remain hidden in the survey report view. In cases where a de-identified data extract is needed, just reach out to our Culture Amp Support team and ask to be connected with a support specialist.

The exported file is in CSV format and encompasses survey response data, including numerical ratings ranging from 1 to 5, indications of skipped questions (-1), comments linked to rating questions and responses to free-text questions. The file also records the survey submission timestamp and any available demographic information about the participant.

Survey Data Analysts can export a raw data extract using one of the following options:

Survey Operations page:

  1. Click Edit Survey from the Surveys page

  2. Click Operations under Settings

  3. Click Extract Data

Survey Admin Reports page:

  1. Click View Reports from the Surveys page

  2. Click Export > Raw Data Extract

With either method, a confirmation will be presented, warning the user that this activity will be tracked:

Clicking Export will start the download process to create a CSV file. We recommend these files are treated with care so that only people in your organization who need to see the raw data have access to the file.

Any raw data extracts are displayed on the Audit Log page:

FAQs

Why do I see an "RDE too large" error?

If you enabled the Raw Data Extract option on your survey before launch but can't export it from the Operations page, it might be because your data is too big. If you have this issue, contact the Culture Amp Support team and ask to speak with a specialist. They can adjust your survey settings in the platform's backend so you can export this data.

Why can't I see the option to download the raw data?

If you can't see the option to download the raw data, it might not have been enabled before the survey was launched. To check, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Surveys > Confidentiality tab.

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see if raw data has been checked.

  3. If it has, you might not have the Survey Data Analyst role assigned.

  4. You can't assign yourself this role, but another Account Admin user can do it for you using these steps.

  5. Once you have the Survey Data Analyst role, and if the raw data option was enabled before the survey went live, you'll be able to extract the data.

Just a heads up: once the survey is live, you can't enable the raw data option, so it's important to double-check this before launching your next survey!
